The second in a series of community events was a resounding success, attracting over 150 local people.

The event aimed to tackle health inequalities (unjust differences in health outcomes influenced by factors such as income, education, housing, and access to healthcare), which can result in challenges including reduced life expectancy and increased rates of illness.

Redcar Baptist Church was chosen because of its location near the town centre, accessibility, eco-shop and much more.  By hosting events within local communities, we provide residents with practical advice and support to help improve their health and wellbeing. At the same time, these events offer a valuable opportunity for our team to hear directly from individuals about the challenges they face when accessing health and social care services.

We listened to what local people wanted to know more about and invited services including:-

  • Mental Health
  • Weight Management
  • Sexual Health
  • Domestic Abuse
  • Drug and Alcohol support
  • Oral Health

Who was there, and what was on offer:-

  • Awayout - an outreach and prevention charity which aims to engage, empower and equip vulnerable and excluded women
  • Cleveland Fire Brigade generated Safer Homes Assessments
  • Community policing
  • ELM, giving information on healthy weight, taking blood pressure and cholesterol blood tests
  • Everyone Active had some new members join, to improve their physical and mental health.
  • Healthy Communities and Social Prescribers
  • Middlesbrough Voluntary Development Agency linked up with people who want to start volunteering
  • Oral Health, teaching young and old about good oral hygiene.
  • Sexual Health gave out free condoms and information.
  • Thirteen Employability
  • Thrive, consisting of We are With you and Harbour, providing advice and support around drugs and alcohol and domestic violence
  • We Care You Care connected with unpaid carers
  • Teesside MIND, offered information on their local support

Thank you to our team of volunteers for supporting us on the day, this included two students on work experience from Prior Pursglove College,  the HWST team, staff from each of the services, the Baptist Church for hosting and of course the people of Redcar for joining us.  We look forward to more events this year.

Wellbeing Pledge

We wanted people to think about how they can help themselves based on what they had learned from the event and asked them, 'What is the one thing you will do differently'?

They told us :
