Spotlight Award Winner: Michelle Calvert
A Journey Fuelled by Determination and Purpose
Michelle, who is Deaf and uses British Sign Language (BSL) as her first language, joined the Deaf Empowering Network (DEN) in 2021 as a volunteer. From day one, she impressed colleagues with her positivity, determination, and unwavering “can‑do” spirit. No barrier, challenge, or setback has ever stopped Michelle from achieving her goals — a mindset that has inspired everyone around her.
Originally trained as a school chef, Michelle faced redundancy from the local authority. Instead of seeing this as a setback, she embraced it as an opportunity for change. DEN recognised her potential and welcomed her into a volunteer role, where Michelle quickly discovered a new passion: supporting and empowering the Deaf community.
Empowering Through Education
Since retraining and qualifying as a BSL Teacher, Michelle has taught over 300 learners, helping them achieve BSL Levels 1–3. Her teaching goes far beyond grammar and vocabulary — Michelle raises vital Deaf awareness, improves communication between Deaf and hearing people, and fosters genuine inclusion across organisations and communities.
Her learners describe her as patient, knowledgeable, and inspiring, and many credit Michelle for opening doors to new careers, new understanding, and new ways of connecting.
A Trusted Advocate for the Deaf Community
Alongside teaching, Michelle has become a highly respected Advocate, supporting more than 100 Deaf individuals across the Tees Valley. She helps people navigate health, social care, and community services, ensuring Deaf voices are heard, rights are understood, and support is accessible.
Michelle’s calm, solution‑focused approach means she is someone people can rely on — especially during complex or challenging situations. Her impact has transformed lives, strengthened confidence, and empowered people to be heard.
