Why did you decide to become a Community Champion?

I have been working in and with the community for around 20 years. I have a BSc in Health and Social Care from the Open University and an MSc in Dementia Studies from Stirling University. I am also a certified Independent PAC (Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care) Consultant and Trainer.  I think my skills can help within this role in the South Tees area.

How does your role help people in South Tees?

Young At Heart ULO CIC is a user led organisation set up by and for people living with dementia and their care partners to access holistic activities and peer support. We deliver a range of activities that include Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, Musical Memories and Personal Playlists, as well as small day trips.

Hand In Hand Activities CIC delivers a health and well-being programme for older people, people living with long term health conditions, disabled people and care partners. Our current offering includes inclusive fitness classes and Cycling Without Age, which provides trishaw rides for up to two people at a time around community settings.

My history includes providing care and support for people who receive Direct Payments and I also ran the award winning Our Version of Events (OVOE), which was a user-led group for adults with learning disabilities.
